Our Story
At Thoroughbred Provisions LLC, our journey began unexpectedly on a sun-soaked vacation in Cancun, Mexico. It was there that Blake and his wife, Graziella, discovered a unique tequila that captured her heart. For someone who rarely indulged in spirits, Graziella’s newfound affection was both surprising and inspiring.
As they packed their bags to return home, the couple couldn’t resist bringing back a twenty 750 ml bottles not knowing customs only allows each person to have one liter if alcohol. However, upon arriving at customs in Baltimore, they faced a pivotal moment. When asked if they had anything to declare, they honestly revealed their stash. To their surprise, an intrigued customs agent suggested they explore the possibility of having a store like Spec's import the tequila to the United States. This conversation sparked an idea: why not build a company based on this premise.
Thus, Thoroughbred Provisions LLC was born—a name inspired by Blake’s call sign from his time in the United States Marine Corps. Instead of backing down from the challenges ahead, Blake and Graziella took a leap of faith. They dove into the complex world of distilled spirits and wine, navigating regulations with the help of experienced legal counsel. After consulting and reaching a conclusion from their legal team and receiving the green light, they secured land in Palmer, Texas, and began constructing their warehouse, only to face setbacks when they discovered that they were not able to operate as wholesale distributors because off premise sales had not been put up for ellection since 1933, and would ultimately bring the progression of the company to a screeching hault.
Rather than succumb to disappointment, dug there toes in the sand and were not going to take no for an answer. After thorough research, they visited the Ellis County courthouse to initiate the process of gathering signatures for a ballot proposal for off-premises liquor sales. This monumental task required 5,600 signatures within a 60 day period, those signatures would then need to be verified by the elections office which then would be certified and placed onto the upcoming voting ballot, shortly after receiving the signature sheets they attempted to hit the ground running and found that they were two weeks in to the 60 days and they needed to hire additional help to acquire the signatures because if they werent able the petition would have to be done the following year with out promise that it would make it to election or be voted in successfully, they knew failure wasnt an option and their perseverance paid off in November 2023 when they achieved a historic victory, with 66.05% of voters saying yes to distilled spirit sales in Ellis County Precinct 1—an initiative that hadn’t been attempted since Prohibition.
Through every obstacle, Blake and Graziella remained undeterred. They wore their struggles like badges of honor, embracing the lessons of resilience and adaptability.
